Atari is releasing a new console next month, date set for the 27th of November.
Atari's new console, the Atari VCS, will ship with 100 pre-loaded games. Ironically shortly after the release of the PS5 (November 12) and the Xbox Series X (November 15). An odd move considering all-eyes are currently fixed on the next-gen console release.
It's easy to assume that buyers will have provisioned their, well, provisions for these massive releases. Not to mention any publicity the Atari console receives will undoubtedly be overshadowed by the next-gen PR storm to come.
However, one could argue that the gamer who is considering purchasing this unit will likely be pursuing some sort of nostalgic sentiment and are, well, not interested in gaming on either of the next-gen consoles up on offer. Perhaps the Atari marketing team understand how to ride a wave, the console wave so to speak, and understand that buyer sentiment toward consoles is likely to be elevated at this time.
Whichever way your beautiful brain chooses to view it, its a strange time to market the release of this console and given how 2020 has gone so far, perhaps strangeness is not so strange after all.
